Neon Drag
Neon Drag is a MOBA Racing Game Prototype Made in unity where players compete as a variety of classes to lap each other. Each lap, players get upgrades do aid themselves on their drive to be the last racer standing. The game was deeply inspired by F-Zero, Tron, and 80s synth pop. While neon drag was a solo project, the logo, music, & speedometer were created by leo Robles.
Intent
Most racing games are built in one of two ways, either intending to be a casual cart racing game, FOCUSED on a social take that EXPERIENCE or a hyper realistic simulation, FOCUSED on a highly technical serious game experience. in most racing games to come out recently, there is no middle ground. the goal of the project was to look at the racing genre as a whole and try to innovate on these formula and bring new life to the racing genre without following either of these patterns. The result was neon drag.
Iterative Process
Neon Drag was a project that was developed over the course of 3 months starting as a maze running game, to see more of how the game evolved check out this page here.
Research
After the iteration process, I had finalized on where I wanted to take the game, a very fast paced racing game that emphasized head to head interaction and had a robust progression system that would allow for quick tactical choices.
When looking at games I wanted to emulate the feel of, I absolutely pulled from F-Zero, a game that despite it’s age feels incredibly quick, responsive, and dynamic. When it came to progression, I really looked at MOBA games, as they provided a progression systems that didn’t bleed from round to round without making the choices too shallow.
